Snacko Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 I found this XBMC free Media Center software and they said how easy it was to make a bootable usb stick without installing anything. I made the stick twice, but it doesn't work for some reason... It boots with LiLi (Linux Live) and then XBMC asks for a userid and password, so I enter xbmc/xbmc (I had to search for that login as it was not in the instructions), and then all I get is some command prompt... Argg... Just wanted to take a look at it.... Too much frustration... Wondering if anybody here uses this. It looks kind of cool... Quote
GreyKnight Posted November 15, 2011 Posted November 15, 2011 Never used it Snacko, but what about this from the wiki... Now that we have the user logged in we need it to auto start XBMC. In /home/<YOUR_XBMC_USERNAME>/.xinitrc add the following to the end of the file (after removing/commenting any other exec lines that start a windowmanager): exec /usr/bin/ck-launch-session /usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session /usr/bin/xbmc --standalone -fs http://wiki.xbmc.org..._XBMC_for_Linux I guess you already followed this? http://wiki.xbmc.org..._USB_thumbdrive HOW-TO:Install XBMC from a USB thumbdrive From XBMC Jump to: navigation, search What you'll need A USB thumbdrive Download the ISO image of the latest version of XBMC Live from XBMC Downloads. Search online and get yourself a copy of UNetBootin. Set up Prepare the thumbdrive by formatting it as a FAT32 device. Run the UNetBootin program and select the ‘Disk Image’ radiobutton. Then click the button at the end of the row to locate your ISO image file. Select the USB thumbdrive as target device to ‘burn’ the image to. Click the ‘OK’ button and wait until the image has been written to the USB drive. You now have a bootable USB memory stick ready to install XBMC Live. Go into the BIOS of the system you'll be installing and change the boot options so that it boots first from the USB drive. Install Insert the USB drive into one of your machine's USB ports and boot it up. You should see a GRUB bootloader screen, with ‘UNetBootin’ at the top. Select the option to install XBMC Live. Once the installation starts, answer the questions for country, language, keyboard type, etc. You may see a red screen informing you that the installer was unable to detect any network. Just select the ‘continue’ option for now, you can fix this later. Next you will see the setup screens for which drive/partition to install to. Select your preference and continue. Wait for the installer to complete installation and answer any questions that may be prompted. When the installation finishes, remove the USB drive and select ‘continue’ to reboot the system. Quote
Snacko Posted November 17, 2011 Author Posted November 17, 2011 Thanks GK, I'll give that a try. I had seen that site, but had not read it all because everything else I saw showed you just had to make a bootable Lili XBMC usb stick and boot. It was supposedly that simple. Quote
