  1. Thanks for the help. :angel7:

    Have 2 brand new memory chips/card but I may get that tested.

    Puter was cleaned when chips were installed, so that should be ok.

    Moved puter to increase air circulation and am thinking of placing a fan by vent to increase air flow. The idea or overheating is something I never thought of, considering it has never crashed for that reason, and I have used this puter lots but maybe the sim pushes the system hard.

    Does it crash when running other programs?

    Hey Crash

    No, other programs are pretty stable. I have run other games for hours and have had no issues. At first IL2 would crash because I did not have enough memory, it would happen when lots of objects and action would happen. I upped memory to 2 Gig. That seemed to solve that issue. The two 1 Gig chips are brand new and should be Ok but you never know. Now, as then, it crashes, actually it goes to system re-boot, at any given time, sometimes just when launching the sim. I usually just launch it again and its fine. Will run sometimes for hours, then boom. Sometimes I get a blue screen with a dumping memory message, most times its blank screen, accompanied by noise in headset, I don’t touch anything and after about 30 seconds of this lock up it goes to re-boot to desktop along with XP’s fatal error do you want to report message. I usually just start sim again and continue. To me its probably something fundamental to my system and configuration that IL2 has issues with but I am not skilled to solve more than just the most basic of conflicts.

  2. Ok, somebody give me the low down on this UP2.01. I know its some sort of switching program of sorts I think. I am patched up to 4.101, so will this work when someone talks about running 4.09 etc. I am hesitant to add too much to the sim in an effort to avoid crashing problems that may occur because things get to complex or conflicts etc. So after you install it, do you run it before IL2 or ……….:huh:

  4. I still have to figure out why IL2 crashes every once in a while, usually a few times an evening. It usually results in the computer re-booting itself. Sometimes I get that memory dumping message, other times the screen just goes black, the sound in headset sounds like a jackhammer. Both result in the computer re-booting itself, could be annoying in middle of a furball when someone is depending on you etc.

  5. That actually sounds like it would be a lot of fun to try. I have to get my mic sorted out somewhat before I try, I am sure people don't want to listen to my local TV programing in the background, even with "push to talk".

    I need a throat mic, they are about $80.00 and a little much at the moment. TrackIR would be nice as well.........sigh.......

    Listen, I need all the help I can get, my shooting sucks. I see these guys, a short burst and the plane goes down, me even when I am hammering the target I often get a smoke trail (if I connect at all) and then I am chasing again trying to finish the job, (and this is against the AI). Like I say, I suck!

  6. Well got online tonite, on Hyperlobby, YAY. Found a lonely little site and got shot down by AI, repeatedly. No Teamspeak, don't have good mic yet, so could not talk to other pilot flying Blue with me, plus I could not see any address info to connect that way, so, have a lot to learn. Anyways, its a landmark. LOL

  7. I take it that all these headsets use USB, my headset with mic is part of a Sidewinder Voice Command and still uses the stereo type plug connections. Is the USB connection superior now or just more current? Been considering online play, one of the things I have to sort out is mic. The puter is in a family room, lots of background noise, TV etc. Been thinking of having to use the press to speak feature to get around this. Are there any headset / mic set-ups that are better at not picking up background noise? I doubt it, but is would be great to find a throat activated mic, but I doubt they make that for PC.

  8. Plantronics 995 wireless

    Plantronics-Audio-995_3.jpg

    I find wireless devices are Ok if you don't forget to charge them or they die in the middle of something, as well as it don't cause some sort of conflict. I believe the KISS principle is always the best, sometimes fewer bells and whistles is better, but if it works with no problems wireless is great.

  9. what nvida card, high end, mid or low?

    Can't remember the exact card, probably a mid to low, If I remember right I spent under $200.00 on it about a year, year and a half ago. Will be able to tell you exactly tonight when I get home.

    OK, here are the basic details for the card.

    NVIDIA GeForce 6200, 128 MB

    Bios 5.43.02.66.00

    1024 by 768 pixels

    Color quality 32 bit

  10. I add my vote in for more RAM, what RAM does your system use?

    I may have some spare if it is DDR - got loads ;)

    Yes its XP. Yikes, was able to run it on 512 but was getting a lot of pausing in the action, thought it might be memory so I increased it to 1GB. Seemed to run better but now in Pilot Career the missions are getting more and more aircraft and the computer is crashing. So it is memory, thought it might be.

    Thanks for the offer on the memory, I will probably pick some up locally, I am an impatient type and want to continue career and I don’t think I will get much further without the extra memory. Now it might still be something else but I think this has to be corrected first, then I will see what happens.

    I am running 4.101 with no mods so I am hoping the issues will be few.

    Thanks for getting back to me on this, its appreciated. J

  11. I’ve gotten them as well. I just assumed that it was something to do with the mods. If you Smart Dogz figure out a solution, please let the rest of us know. :icon_farao:

    I think that the blocky stuff is best corrected by dabbling in the conf.ini file

    Here's an example for high-end ATI card users - make sure that Catalyst AI is Disabled in the CCC - and you are using latest drivers.

    [Render_OpenGL]

    TexQual=3

    TexMipFilter=2 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< can be tried at 3

    TexCompress=0 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< can be set at 2 if necessary

    TexFlags.UseAlpha=0

    TexFlags.UseIndex=0

    TexFlags.PolygonStipple=1

    TexFlags.UseClampedSprites=0

    TexFlags.DrawLandByTriangles=0

    TexFlags.UseVertexArrays=1

    These settings have worked on-line for me for several years. A friend of mine is using them on a 3870 and anything above that should be good to go.

    Any setting recommended for Nvida users?

  12. cLod..oh well.. 'bout time I got with the times it seems!

    Glad to see IL2 has some mileage yet :)

    Hope so. Mind you at present I do not fly online so it makes little matter to me at that level, I still will get enjoyment from the sim and I am sure there will be people flying it online for some time to come as all can not afford the hardware upgrade.

  13. :iagree: I stay cool until everything is sorted. Me personally don´t care to much about shadow effects and other flashy details. For me it is the feeling of flying that matters. I think the UP thingy is close enough, but you folks that have runned this game for decades may have another opinion. But what do I know, I´m just a knoob compared to you experienced fellow mates :gym:

    I would have to say the same, the detail in IL2 is good enough for me and I don't run anything fancier that 4.101, its the flying that counts, interesting but not impossible missions & faily good flight models.

  14. I am sure my machine will not run COD well so I will not be spending any time with that sim in the near future. It will be IL2 for some time to come and I am hoping that people will stick with it as well.

    Training nites may not be a bad idea. I fly against the AI and that is hard enough. Going thru pilot career at moment, don't always come back with a kill, and I mean planes get away from me that I am sure you guys would leave in the dust. That plus I don't have Track IR, and my situational awareness is not comparable to somebody that has it. Still working on keeping my eye on plane and I still fly with the text above the plane to help my identify and see it. Landings are about 50/50 but its getting better. My ground attack time is paying off but still no expert. Have most of the realism settings on but not all yet. Anyways, I have a way to go yet before I am at least somewhat proficient in this sim.

  15. So in a Bf109 I should not have to worry about much at all. Saw a discussion somewhere lately about whether or not the 109 even had prop pitch adjustment. I guess I will have to select that option and see what happens. Now you guys that use it must use the keyboard to operate the functions as if you are like me the stick & throttle buttons are all used for other things, Yes?

    I never touch it in a 109 and I do just fine. I do remember some talk about it though, so I guess you could use it to squeeze out the last drops of performance in it, if you know how, but again, not using it won't make you fly significantly worse :) Not sure if you can ruin the engine with the wrong settings though...

    Sounds like you fly other planes that may require adjusting of settings, if you do, do you use the keyboard to do it or do you have it somehow mapped to your stick & throttle?

  16. As far as complex engine management goes, basically it boils down to this:

    Mixture - on some planes, mostly russian and japanese, you need to lower this a bit as you climb higher. when your engine starts acting weird and starts letting out smoke through the exhaust, just lower the mixture until it stops doing that

    Prop pitch - many planes have automatic prop pitch control and can be flown like that with no worries, others that don't can be flown on 100% without much fear, but it's better to lower it to 90-80% when in fast dives. Keep on 100 when climbing. If you wish to conserve fuel and keep the engine cooler, lower pitch to 90-80% when cruising. Also, on some planes, like the Dora, it shouldn't be touched because you can fry the engine easily.

    Supercharger - in planes that have manual supercharger switch, you need to change supercharger speed at a certain altitude, for the engine to work better. most planes have 2 supercharger speeds, some have 3. The altitude for switching supercharger speeds is different for different planes (read plane manual), but usually the first switch is somewhere between 2000 and 3000 meters. If unsure, you can look at your manifold pressure gauge as you change supercharger speeds, the supercharger setting at which the manifold pressure gauge shows a higher reading is better.

    it's fairly simple really, and most of the time you don't have to worry about any of this except switching supercharger in some planes as you fly higher...
