  1. If it is over 123 meg (I think) then you will need ftp!

    Roger,

Err, I vaguely remember some sort of procedure for posting large files via ftp, but I am at a loss at the details. I think you had put a post up detailing it, but was unable to find it.

  2. That is indeed a cool effect. I was fooling around with ROF this morning and am continually impressed with the visuals and the flight model. I love these airplanes but my gunnery is pathetic. I can't hit the broad side of a hangar.

Firing guns and be accurate in a ww1 fighter was probably really difficult and I'm sure it took these pilots a lot of practice. I guess you learn very quickly when your butt is on the line :) My gunnery is poor too but I find that it helps a lot when you get closer to the target and then fire. Adjusting gun sight views helps too.

Lordie, the graphics on that look phenomenal!

  3. Having spoken with Friar, and having racked my brain (and search a little bit on the web) I think that this is not possible. The AI are for some reason programmed to eject bombs (not sure about drop tanks) before landing.

Fortunately the reason I wanted it was to enable air replenishment of bombs which I realized I can do via cargo drops, so no sweat.

If anyone figures out a way to get planes to hold onto bombs anyway, be sure to post it.

  4. gah.. private album..

DT - our very own gallery here is pretty good ;)

    Takes videos too!

I will start throwing some pics up in the gallery.

What's the parameters for the video? I made a 10 minutes HD video of my first flight, but YouTube gagged in trying to take it in, at least from work. It's over 2GB.

  5. Over the summer I finally got to take a flight in a T-6 Trainer at the Museum of America airpower that my father had gotten my for my birthday 2 years ago. I will post video of that soon, but while I was there, I bumped into a friend of mine who had bought his dad a flight on a C-47 from the same airfield on the same day. He sent me some really nice shots of me in the Texan:

So as a thank you I took some footage my dad shot of his father's flight and put together a momento for him:

  6. Much to my chagrin, while working on a couple of missions, I discovered that AI apparently always dump their bomb payloads (internal or external) before landing. This quite frustratingly prevents me from using them as resupply units for bombs and I am assuming torps. I am afraid to ask this because I am already guessing the answer, but does anyone know of a way to get AI to KEEP their bombs while landing?

  7. Gents,

While working with MDS mission building I was unable to find a comprehensive list of Static Objects which hold Resources and also act as Refuel, Rearm and Repair stations, so I made my own.

    MDS WORKSHEET

The link is to a Google Documents version of a spreadsheet which lists all the currently known (to me that is) objects than can hold resources (fuel, bullets, bombs, engines, etc) and the default values for same if they have any, which many don't. The default values are those in bordered cells.

The file also can act as worksheet for a particular mission or campaign to keep track of alterations you make to these values as you see fit.

If anyone would like an Excel copy of this, let me know and I will send it to you. I was unable to upload it to the vault.

  9. ...since I have flown IL2?

    Two things I can't believe I am mis-remembering:

1 ) You CAN activate the Iron Sight in an aircraft if it has one, right? I can't seem to find the damn key entry in the command list. I know you could do this.

2 ) When you record a track in a multiple position aircraft, can you NOT switch to the other views in the aircraft when reviewing the track? I thought you could do so. Like, after doing a bombing run, you could look at the bomber sight to see what you did there. No?

  10. Welcome back DT! Remember you when I was a knoob (which I still am) and the excellent Pedestal campaign. I was wondering if you went insane and had to be registred at nearby sanatorium after that.

Yes, I did, but I am feeling much better now. Much, much, better. Aces. Feel just FINE! Perfectly calm and relaxed. Yep. NO problemo.

  11. While working with a lot Japanese and American infantry, a couple of immediate observations. Some of this may be old news.

-When killed in a mission, they are listed by the game as "Tanks". Have not confirmed that they are considered armor for purposes of mission objectives. They DO carry along border flag, and thus can advance a front all by their lonesome.

-From initial tests (4xIJA Infantry vs. 4xAmerican infantry) Japanese infantry seem to get the best of American infantry in 1:1 fights. Japanese inflict more damage early, but Americans SEEM to make a little ground further in. More testing needed.

-Firefights at range seem to drag out quite a while, which can lead to units jumbled in along a frontline. Bring em in close if you want things finished sooner.

-American infantry fire bazooka occasionally while IJA only appear to fire guns. If you watch the GI's closely, you'll see rocket flares and trails. They often miss opposing infantry, but when they hit it seems effective. Wonder if it accounts for the kill ratio, and whether they would be better against armor.

-The infantry sometimes apparently "fall" a bit through the ground, with only their chests up visible. Not sure how often it happens, but I bet it makes them considerably harder to hit/kill.

-Aircraft running over infantry will have large important pieces sheared off. Was not able to observe if the infantry suffered any damage. Makes them into possible commandos for screwing with an airfield. Do not know what happens if they run through parked aircraft yet.

-Infantry seem to walk at 15km/hr. Some terrain will affect this, but it not as much as it would appear. They walk on water as far as rivers are concerned.

    More to come.

  12. Yeah, I think that mighta' been me DT.

    It was you, you bastich!

Glad to see you are back.

You lie. You really hate me.

    What's up with Psycho?

Oh, wait, it was Psycho everyone hated. He's good. Workin', livin' with his lovely wife, who makes an awesome Strawberry cheescake.

You still with CNN you commie-pinko?

No, wait...it WAS me you hated.

    Yes. Full-time editor now.

  13. Welcome back DT :thumbsu:

any input you can come up with on mission building with the new tools and mods are needed.

Please post stuff and thoughts on it, for the DS forum

Will do. Jut started working with it, so I am reluctant to start spouting off about what I THINK I know about it before I know for certain. ;)

As great as I think MDS is, I think the manual is pretty unclear about some key things, unfortunately.

    DT,

Welcome back. I am now also in the same boat as you. I now have a 2 year old who has taken much of my flying time away.

Hah! Yes. I remember someone remarked when I pondered my situation in regards to flying after my daughter was born:

    "Basically, you're screwed."

True, but it was worth it, right?

    DT

  14. Well.. to have some of your input into MDS in general, and more specifically missions with objectives that can be used for flying nights and/or ad-hoc co-op type missions for 1 or more humans would be great.

No problem. Couple of questions pertaining to that then.

When you say flying nights, do you guys do things like the bomber themed nights they did via Ubi boards?

Second, any preference for mission lengths? The reason I ask is that I am currently converting the Guadalcanal campaign I had worked on previously from something meant to be flown 1 once a week, into a single 3 hour mission, which I view as manageable for a single mission if there is plenty of action, but pretty much the max length. I might also be able to make it into a single side coop event.

I should also be able to convert the old D-Day dogfight campaign into a MDS one with I think some interesting additions.

    DT

(You see we've kept firmly to our high recruiting standards, mostly based on consumption of alcohol and questionable morals {especially where sheep are concerned})

I wouldn't want it any other way, Badaim. I like having friends in low places.

Well, again, 3 hours would be the max duration for any particular mission. I am hoping the Guad one would be engaging enough to make it wiz by. Another option is to break it into 2-3 1 hour/90 minute chunks, which would allow altering the scenario a bit based on who one the last round.

Actually, while I am experimenting and designing, I really need to join you all in some MDS missions to see how they flow. I have NOT flown in any, so that would be instructive.

Which MDS missions out there have you guys particularly enjoyed?

  16. There's a thread on UBI's Community Help forum: how to get il21946 to work with win7 FIX

That might possibly help you installing a clean version...

As for the current config: Try and run it with sound disabled. If it runs better, then try 'No hardware acceleration' or 'safe DirextX settings'.

From what I read about this laptop on the Internet, to get it running good/better, me thinks you need to focus on grapics settings... turn 'm down, forget about stencil buffer and perfect mode and stuff, keep it simmle,,,

Oh, I am good for now, Gents. All I need this for is to screw around with FMB and MDS, and it appears to work fine for that. I just thought I would mention that playing around with some of the settings above got it to work for me, somehow.

Snacko, not sure which part of what I wrote you are asking about, but having just tried it again, when I click on the IL21946 disc, I hear it spool up and Win 7 brings up a window asking if I want to run setup.exe from the disc. I click "Yes", and literally nothing else happens. Desktop does nada.

When I was clicking the exe for the transferred Ultrapack version, I always got at the least the Selection screen to come up, but without any tweaking when I clicked on it to launch IL-2, it would disappear for about 3 seconds, and then the selection screen would pop back up.

  17. I'm bored with all this chicks with guns stuff. I wanna see chicks, in their underwear, with anti-tank weapons. Thats something I know about. :laughing7:

Amen, brother. I also dig chicks in helmets. Rachel Weisz...

...in Enemy At The Gates, with that big ass Russian Helmet on?

    Grrrrr, baby!

  18. Thanks, folks. Nice to be back. With my daughter now in pre-school part time at least, I have a leetle more free time.

Kudos to Snacko, then. Well done, M8. Looks great. I understand you have been up to some mission building also?

    Roger/Friar,

"we have a dedicated MDS server too that you are more than welcome to play with."

"FoolTrotle has been doing some programming and is putting together a tool to help track the losses."

    Oh? (wipes drool from face)

"If you can spare the time it would be great to have your input."

I just started playing about with MDS in earnest for about a week, but any help I can be, please let me know. I may not be able to still fly a whole lot at the moment, but you know I like working on stuff like this. I would love to help.

  19. Hey Gents,

Thought I would pass this along in the hopes it helps someone with a similar issue in running IL2 Ultrapack on a Windows 7 machine.

My primary install of IL2 is on an XP machine, but recently I wanted to install it with the Ultrapack to a laptop to work on missions during my commute. The laptop, though, has Windows 7, and after transferring my working copy of Ultrapack 3 RC4 to the Win 7 machine, I found it would not work properly.

Initially, the Ultrapack selection screen where you can choose which type of game and the settings for Ram would come up, but when I tried to launch the game, it would seem to launch, then dump back to the selection screen. I played with various elements of the game setup, including IL2 vanilla;various levels of reserved RAM;different compatibility modes (Vista service packs, XP windows not only the game shortcut, but also the actual IL2fb exe and the exe for the set-up program; and others. I had varying degrees of success, with me being able to launch the game with some, only to have it dump to desktop later, or to the selection screen or simply lock up when I tried to fly, or loaded some non-standard maps like the Solomons.

Anyway, I can't say why this worked, or what part of it allowed to work, but after screwing around with various settings, the following now allow me to use the FMB with MDS and from initial tests, even allowing me to run a quick mission.

IL2fb exe = Compatibiliy mode Windows XP Service Pack 3; disabled visual themes, disable desktop composition; disable scaling on high DPI settings; run as ADMIN privilege level

IL2fb.exe shortcut = same settings as above

IL2setup.exe = Compatibility mode Windows XP Service Pack 2

*SET-UP Settings: OpenGL, 800x600 32bit, Use stencil buffer, ATI Radeon, Soundblaster LIve!

JSGME = Compatibility mode Windows XP Service Pack 3

IL2 Selector Screen Settings : RAM usage 256MB, NO items checked below RAM usage

The system this works on is a Dell Inspiron N5010 (I know, not a sexy machine):

    Windows 7 Premium

    Service Pack 1

    64 bit operating system

    Intel Core i3 CPU M 380 @ 2.53ghz

    RAM 3GB

I hope this info is for some use to someone. I have not had time to go back and try to isolate the issue and likely won't bother as long as this set-up works for me.

    DT

PS. One interesting but I think unrelated note. I tried to install 1946 clean to this machine, thinking a clean install might be needed. However, I could NOT for the life of me get Win 7 to install the program. No error message, just simply looked like the Exe was firing up when I clicked on it and then...nothing. Tried couple of different ways, and could not even get the Install screen to show up.
