  1. Just got home and did a test after booting up.  It was 1:20.  11 seconds the second time.

I had Raid0 on my last system with my 6 year old motherboard.  But it was a ASUS Rampage II Extreme.   But, Windows has been integrating Software RAID into Windows since XP.  But I think I am not using that.  I know that I go into my bios and change how the hard drives are accessed.

    EDIT:

Just rebooted and turned off everything in my BitDefender.  And the game started in 16 seconds!  They had said that they fixed their problem with BitDefender, but..  Hmm..

Turns out to be their 'Intrusion Detection' module.  It's off now.  But I wonder why it didn't slow down loading every time?  Only the first time?

  2. You just go into the bios and set it up. You must install some windows drivers too.

Then at bootup I think you then press ctrl-i to do raid setup.

My Bitdefender had caused loading issues in the past. But dcs no longer hangs at 12%. Maybe it's hanging before I see it now? Got me thinking.. Maybe I should do a test without BD running..

  3. Nice update/review Fen!  And not too verbose I must say.  I must!  ;-)

I will say that the game takes a long time to load.  It's been that way for me for a long time.  But, with my new rig, I have extra memory.  And my mb came with some RamCache software.  I set it up to create a large cache in memory when I boot up.  So, once windows loads, any programs/files that I use are cached in memory in case I need them again.

For me, what this means is that the first time DCS loads, it takes almost 2 minutes.  The game performance is improved by this as well since any game files are stored in memory.  But I have not done any tests to compare the increased fps with ram cache.  But I would guess it was maybe a 10-15(+\-) increase in fps.  That will depend on how much memory you have for the cache.  I have a 45gb ram cache.  ;-)  But the best part is that anytime after the game loads, if I close it and restart DCS, it loads in 11 seconds.  Yes, 11 seconds!

So, if you have extra ram that you are not using, or have some empty slots on your mb, I would suggest giving this a try..

  4. Ok, thanks.  Yes, I was in a custom realism setting.  But I was wondering why there was only a Soviet RPM control as a 'general' control.  I have not assigned it, but maybe I should just test it.  Maybe it's a mistake, and it's not just for soviet aircraft?

How do you know what Expert mode is?  When you select it, the list of settings closes so you cannot see it.  Well, I assume I should turn off all of the right column?  (Piloting Assistance)  That has the engine controls assists.  Keep Warmed up engine on.  And the Gameplay options are just up to me I guess..

    EDIT:

Well, I did just assign that Soviet RPM control to an axis, and it works fine in the He111.  So, it's not just for Soviet...

How do you add custom/personal skins to the game?  What folder do they go in?  I've downloaded a few..

Also, how to you play in a tank?  I read about tanks on the forums, but don't see anyway to get into one.  Is that just an online thing?  I'm still knocking around learning the basics, and have not been online yet...

  5. Downloading Now!  This will be great for several of the new aircraft.

I remember playing IL2 with the Korea map many Wed nights with BA, Artie, AP, and the lot, shooting it up with Migs.  HFSX put an end to that..

  6. As a few of you know, I have recently upgraded my mobo, ram, cpu and heatsink.  I have used these parts for about 6 years, auto overclocked at 4ghs most of the time.  I added 6 gigs of G Skill ram a year ago because I couldn't find any matching Corsair Dominitor.  (but now I see some for sale for $50!)  So, after letting my old stuff gather some dust in the corner, it is time for it to go..

Here is a list of what I have to sell.  I am really interested in selling it all at once so to save on shipping and packaging and will work a better deal!  But will break it up.

I put some links in there just for reference, so you can see pictures and descriptions.

    Asus Rampage II Extreme: $180

    Intel i7 965 Extreme LGA1366 BX80601965 3.2GHZ QPI 6.40: $80

Noctua NH-U12P CPU Heat Sink (without fans) $20
Includes fan clips for both sides.  I had 2 fans strapped to this.  It is very tall.  I could not close my case with this on.

Corsair Dominator 1866 DDR3 Triple Channel memory: $45
    Corsair 3 x2gb 1866 DDR3 DIMMs TR3X6G1866C9DF

6gb G SKILL Triple Channel memory: FREE (for a total of 12 gigs of ram)

    total: $325usd

    Everything is plus shipping.
  7. I agree.  I've heard some people complaining.. but that's because they forgot, or don't understand what an alpha is.  We shouldn't even have an Alpha IMO.  It's just asking for complaints from people who don't understand.

But I've had no BSOD.  And actually I don't remember any official crashes.  A few things just don't work, like that Fast Mission Builder.  But I am amazed that I can get online and fly on a server no problem.

Apparently, if you already have the 1.5 beta, the way 2.0 Alpha installs is by downloading the 2.0 installer.  Which then copies about 17gig from your 1.5 folder.  then it does one quick 300meg update.  And then the 2gig download.  Which may be slow with everyone on.  I am only getting 8k/s right now.  Which will take forever..

I have read some people having problems getting NTTR to install, and some workarounds.  But this was just release a few hours ago, so it will be sorted out..

  9. As some of you know, I upgraded my rig a few weeks ago.  I installed Windows 10 Home x64 clean on my existing 2x SanDisk Raid0 drive.  Since then, I have been working out some bugs and kinks here and there.  I've got most of them sorted out, but am wondering about my Partition setup.

I have not heard of this GPT Partition Table thing before.  Obviously Win10 upgrades fine over a Win7 MBR partition.  And I think that when I installed it clean, I didn't change the partition.  But with all the stuff I've been doing, I remember seeing some 'error/info?' message about GPT at some point.  Maybe when I was booting?  Maybe when I was in the bios?  IDK.  It only occured once.  So, now that I have most other problems worked out, I was wondering if anybody knew much about this.  What is it.  Should I change my partition to use this?  I can backup and restore an image on that I guess?

Check if your hard disk drive is using a GPT or MBR Partition Table

A new method of using partitions on your hard disk has been introduced.

The G.U.I.D. Partition Table (GPT) is replacing the long-established Master Boot Record (MBR). GPT forms a part of the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) replacement for the PC BIOS, Microsoft have mandated that all computers using a Windows 8 logo sticker must use this method and it is expected to become universal.

As of 2010, most current operating systems support GPT. Some, including OS X and Microsoft Windows, only support booting from GPT partitions on systems with UEFI firmware. Most Linux distributions can boot from GPT partitions on systems with either legacy BIOS firmware interface or with UEFI.

Disks larger than 2TB necessitate the use of GPT partition tables. A hard disk cannot be both GPT and MBR (all GPT disks do contain a Protective MBR but that only exists to protect a GPT disk from disk management utilities that operate on MBR). Seperate GPT and MBR hard disks can be mixed on systems that support GPT. However, Windows systems that support UEFI require that the OS's boot partition must be on a GPT disk.

Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008 can read and write on GPT disks (booting is only supported for 64-bit editions on UEFI-based systems). Older Windows versions and MS-DOS cannot access GPT partitions so users need to know if their hard disk does use GPT.

PS: one of the problems that I figured out was that Task Scheduler crashes if you have Fraps set to Start with Windows.  You get 1 fraps error when you Start Task Manager.  From then on you get a MMC Snapin error every time and Task Scheduler is useless.

Also, BitDefender has a new Ransomware feature.  This stopped explorer.exe from accessing my Taskbar icons.  This took several weeks to figure out, as the Ransomware normally pops up a window to ask if the app can have access.  But it didn't most of the time.  I finally just shut it off..
