The story I heard is that his squad mates watched him make a perfect gear up landing on the ice, but that the plane broke through just after coming to a stop. It's likely that an engine failure was the cause of the crash, but I guess that wouldn't be good news. It has also been speculated that the pilot removed his harness before the landing to facilitate his escape and ended up getting knocked out because of it and drowning.
