For a couple of months our main email address that we both use has been sending out an email advertising viagra to all the contacts in that account. It does it once a week and it is becoming a REAL PITA. It's a 'Hotmail' account. Is it best to delete it and start again? I think it came from an email that was sent to us that we opened that has since been deleted. I've tried Avira, MalwareBytes, AVG and ALL come back having found nothing. So I set it to junk (worried that I might not receive any legitimate emails from you in the future) and I still see the odd email appear in my junk folder once a week as you say. I've never experienced anyone having their Hotmail account hijacked and made to send spam with. Have you contacted Hotmail about this? Does someone in your family use Outlook Express to access/download their Hotmail messages? I do know Outlook Express was/is notorious for being the a good tool for Trojans to pilfer through your contacts list, and send emails out to everyone found within. Plenty of forums/threads from people who have tried to contact Hotmail about this but have had no success. They have got the impression that the spam comes from Hotmail itself because no-one has found anything malicious on their computer. My daughter uses Outlook and I think that is where it came from. gec Posted May 28, 2010 Report Share Posted May 28, 2010 do u use POP connection to your hotmail account or http? if u use POP the the virus is spreading from one of your computers. if u do not use POP then your hotmail account must be hijacked. Administrators Report Share Posted May 28, 2010 Sounds like a virus to me - One solution if you're using a commercial product (like Norton for example) is to pop the CD into the machine and boot the machine from the disk. This will run the anti-virus scan from the disk, bypassing the hard drive and therefore will find any nasties which may be masking themselves if you boot up from the HDD. You'll need to be connected to the web via a wired connection to do this as the virus definitions on the CD will be out of date. Alternatively, give me a call, I've got the gear here to do it. Snacko Posted May 28, 2010 Report Share Posted May 28, 2010 Are you sure that it came from 'your' email address and email server? Or does it just look like it did? Maybe it just has your name and email address, but actually was sent from somewhere else. It is easy to send an email from anywhere and make it look like it was from somebody. I did this with a relative on April Fools day years ago and make it look like she was announcing a new baby. In this case there is nothing you can do about it....
