ATI Settings That Work for IL-2

Does this sound like you?

* You use an ATI card

* You have graphic issues, especially with UP 2.0 or any mod package

* These include but are not limited to

>Color flashes when gunfire comes directly at you

> The landscape grows and shrinks as you fly toward or away from it

> On some maps there is a fog in the distance until you get close enough for details to render

You, like me have checked if these issues are there with an unmodded version of the game and for the most part they are not.

So you now have concluded it's not your card or computer. There are so many different settings and you are tired of trying this set of settings only to find they don't work for you.

I was in the same boat until I found this at the ATI/AMD site. It's a suggested set of settings for the [Open GL] section of your conf.ini. I gave it a try and it works for me. Framerate is untouched (45-105 FPS)

So I thought I would share it with ya'll. If anyone has had these issues and haven't yet found an answer, you might give this a try. It's designed for newer ATI Radeon cards and specifically for the CAT 8.12 Drivers but works fine for my ASUS 4870 with CAT 8.53 Drivers.

All I did is make a copy of the conf.ini file and change only the things which were different from mine. I took the current conf.ini file and put it in a safe place and then I inserted the modified conf.ini file.

If these settings don't work for you then you can replace the new file with the copied original and return the game to the state it was in prior to trying this solution

.

I am pleased with the results. Both "vanilla" and mod versions of the game now run and look extremely good.

I hope this helps someone.

If you have the "atioglxx.dll" file in your IL2 Folder i strongly recomend you remove it.

This line made me suspicious from the very start. It's actually wrong. Flanker's response is more correct.

Here's my Render OGL lines:

[Render_OpenGL]

TexQual=3

TexMipFilter=3

TexCompress=2

TexFlags.UseDither=0

TexFlags.UseAlpha=0

TexFlags.UseIndex=0

TexFlags.PolygonStipple=0

TexFlags.UseClampedSprites=0

TexFlags.DrawLandByTriangles=0

TexFlags.UseVertexArrays=0

TexFlags.DisableAPIExtensions=0

TexFlags.ARBMultitextureExt=1

TexFlags.TexEnvCombineExt=1

TexFlags.SecondaryColorExt=1

TexFlags.VertexArrayExt=0

TexFlags.ClipHintExt=0

TexFlags.UsePaletteExt=0

TexFlags.TexAnisotropicExt=1

TexFlags.TexCompressARBExt=1

TexFlags.TexEnvCombine4NV=0

TexFlags.TexEnvCombineDot3=1

TexFlags.DepthClampNV=0

TexFlags.SeparateSpecular=1

TexFlags.TextureShaderNV=0

HardwareShaders=1

Shadows=2

Specular=2

SpecularLight=2

DiffuseLight=2

DynamicalLights=1

LandShading=3

LandDetails=2

LandGeom=3

TexLarge=1

TexLandQual=3

TexLandLarge=1

VideoSetupId=17

Water=2

Effects=1

ForceShaders1x=0

PolygonOffsetFactor=-0.0625

PolygonOffsetUnits=-1.0

CCC settings:

AA = x4 (narrow-tent x6 sampling); AAA = enabled, set at Quality; AF = x4; Catalyst A.I. = disabled; Mipmap Detail Level = High Quality:

Optional: Vertical Refresh = On, unless.......; OGL/Triple Buffering = Enabled.

Note: Vertical refresh is optional, I just prefer not to see 'tearing' as I look around with TrackIR. Triple Buffering is not required unless Vert. refresh is enabled.

Depending on which CCC you have, select Adaptive Multi-Sample AA rather than Super-sampling.

I have an FPS rate of 60 most of the time, dipping down to a minimum of 35 in intense combat. If you have a 48xx series card then there is no point in going beyond the 9.10 Catalysts (in which case you don't need the atioglxx.dll in IL2) If you have later drivers then you will get the blocky text issue ( cured by putting the atioglxx.dll in IL2)

If you own a 57xx card you're screwed until Ati get off their collective arse. You should definitely report the problems using the Catalyst Crew feedback site, but don't bother hitting the AMD forum, they aren't interested.

Edit: And I should add - no flashing, no shader problems, no issues at all in UP 2.0

I would not trust anything that whitesnake posts. He has made a few posts in the UKDED forums that have been shown to be questionable. He also makes some pretty blanket statements without qualifications or solutions.

most of the settings in these sections are determined by your choises when you run il2setup or video options in game and are described here

http://mission4today.com/index.php?name=Knowledge_Base&op=show&kid=27

IMHO the best place for tech support is mission4today and although some of their guides are old, they should give a sounder base for people to work on

e.g. I havnt updated the conf guide for the newer drivers or mods but most of the basics are still there

Yo, having these issues: blocky unreadable text, flashing cockpit when firing, pretty much unplayable. I am using catalyst 10.2, but I hear a work around is to put the ati .dll from catalyst 9.10 in the IL-2 folder. Anyone know where to get said dll? AMD doesn't seem to let you download older versions that I can find,

setting

TexFlags.UseVertexArrays=0

TexFlags.VertexArrayExt=0

in conf.ini will fix flashing.

blocky text is a bad driver install problem. make sure u uninstall driver using ati uninstall ftom control panel, reboot and make new install. also make sure u have the correct driver version.

I have an ATI 4870x2 and have been using the 9.10 cats for about 6 months. They are the only ones that really work in IL2 for me. I have not tried putting just a dll from it in the game's folder. I read somewhere not to do that, but I have also read several posts of users doing that. I guess you just have to remember you did that if you update drivers later on and expect changes to the game?

yo gec, and Snacko! Thanks, I managed to find the 9.10 catalyst drivers on some shady site and installed it without scanning for viruses, and the amount of porn popups on my computer hasn't increased from the "normal" amount, so I am assuming that it was clean. I just uninstalled cat 10.2 and am just running 9.10.

I also have a 4870x2 card, the thing heats my apartment, but seems to drive IL-2 pretty good! Now just need to get the latest Il-2 going, as word on the street is that 4.09 is out and these mods are in vogue.

Thanks,

Stingray
