In Remeberance

Today is Veterans Day and I thought I would share this with you.

On November 11, 1999 Terry Kelly was in a Shoppers Drug Mart store in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. At 10:55 AM an announcement came over the store's PA asking customers who would still be on the premises at 11:00 AM to give two minutes of silence in respect to the veterans who have sacrificed so much for us.

Terry was impressed with the store's leadership role in adopting the Legion's "two minutes of silence" initiative. He felt that the store's contribution of educating the public to the importance of remembering was commendable.

When eleven o'clock arrived on that day, an announcement was again made asking for the "two minutes of silence" to commence. All customers, with the exception of a man who was accompanied by his young child, showed their respect.

Terry's anger towards the father for trying to engage the store's clerk in conversation and for setting a bad example for his child was later channeled into a beautiful piece of work called, "A Pittance of Time".

If you receive this after 11:00 AM please take two minutes sometime today to remember all those who have sacrificed for their country in time of war.

Rememberance Sunday (as we in the UK call it) is a good time for us to reflect that whatever percieved hardships we endure nowadays, we have a hell of a lot to be grateful for.

As a cadet in the '70s, I was fortunate to be chosen to play 'Last Post' and 'Reveille' for a service held locally. An old girl supplying tea and biscuits after the event had tears in her eyes

as she said how beautifully I played, and how she was reminded of her Merchant Fleet husband. In spite of my youthful arrogance, I was very moved.

I wont forget them. I wish we could learn more from them. So we dont keep having new generations of dead veterans.

I don't think there is any worse folly for a society or civilization than to forget that a life free from sacrifice and fear does not exist in nature, but is bought and paid for by the effort and sacrifices of others, whether in the past, the present, or future.

The sacrifice should be more equally shared, but at the very LEAST respect and reverance is due those shouldering those burdens.

I thank them all for everything good in life.

At work today we lined all the trucks outside the front of the firestation and lined ourselves up in uniform and stood to attention for 2 Min's at 11am precisely.

Quite e few passing cars noticed us and pulled over to show respect.

I hope that never changes .

Ditto to all that's been said. Painless, I bet you guys looked sharp as hell out there....I hope somebody somewhere took a shot of that. When I was a dispatcher, the local FD used to do a similar thing at the main HQ station.
