PWCG P-38 Lightning Strikes Co-op Campaign

Recommended Posts

Hi chaps, I see next campaign mission is tomorrow, sadly, I will be away tomorrow - believe it or not, we had tickets for the family booked to Lapland UK and will be there tomorrow evening. Due to covid their way of doing things has changed, and they have staggered start times and so on. Our slot starts at 4:30pm. This means there is no way I will be able to get through Lapland, which we are told is around 4 hours, and get back home in time to fly 😟

Again, I apologise I have not been able to make a campaign mission in a few weeks now, sadly illness and chaos have taken over my household the last few weeks :( I do hope to be able to be back soon.

FYI Tom, although I'm hoping to fly tomorrow evening, I am currently sans headset so I cannot use my TIR. If the new one turns up, we're all good but if not, I'll not be able to participate.

Closing to visual range the bogeys were ID'd as five Ju 52s and leading his element up sun Lt. Rea then set them up for a classic bounce. Rea and his White 2 2nd Lt. Baker shot down one apiece in quick order, with the 2nd element arriving soon after to get in on the action, 2nd Lts. Hinkley and Rox also claiming one each in the ensuing massacre, Rea mopping up the final e/a.

Some further gun-cam footage of the last mission flown to whet your appetites for tomorrow gentlemen.
Illustrating perfectly just how terrible my gunnery can be against such a huge lumbering easy target!

Thugs, the lot of you....poor defenceless Tante Ju....

Well, if you choose to fly - in daylight - barely 50km from the front-line in the face of crippling enemy air superiority and then you choose not to bring a rear gunner...  #darwinaward

The outlook for my replacement headset is improving, according the Yodel app it's 38 stops away now.

Yodel! you should be fearful.

No matter, if your parcel hasnt arrived check the roof, their drivers often throw packages up there.
unless its already been crushed and kicked down the street. it should be fine.

Oh and... reporting for duty this evening...

As it happens the parcel arrived safe and sound and the contents all present and correct...

Also reporting for duty

A mixed bag for 485th again....

We reached the front lines on waypoints with White Flight above the cloud and Red just below. Turned south into patrol area and saw air to air tracer far off at our 12o’clock and a flamer trailing smoke towards the ground. Artie and Kimo also called air to air tracer at their 3o’clock. With so much air activity I called for 485th to jettison bombs and head towards the action. My wingman Rox and I saw only one enemy aircraft which did not appear to be damaged or streaming and was in a fight with a P38. Rox saw two other friendlies above but not involved in the fight. At this point the FW banked and turned right across our noses, so I slotted in behind and shot a quick lead burst and broke off. Rox said he had a shot so I told him to take it . I looked down and to my right to see the EA spinning towards the ground and confirmed Rox’s kill.

Turns out in the debrief after the mission that Jabo had been chasing that particular FW around for some time and we stole it. Sorry about that Nick, it was the only enemy aircraft anyone from 485th saw all mission, it was in our southern patrol area and we were not warned off on whisper. I now know it was the last of five FWs four of which had already been shot down by 402nd.

Artie was hit by flak and then the by the internet and we lost him. Pooka was also damaged by flak but was escorted home by Friar and eventually one lonely Kimo. Rox and myself continued with ground staffing and got a reasonable haul. Excellent wingman work Rox !
Happy to apologies to Nick for the rude interruption  but not inclined to apologise for going for that EA in the first place given the circumstances.

No need to apologise Mick, but it's worth noting that as Rox appeared in front of me I was firing on the EA so it's quite possible he was hit by my rounds in the process. I'm glad I didn't hit anything important. It does underline the importance of improving the communication between the units if we're operating in the same area though as none of us want a friendly kill on our records.

I was in the bomb aimer position setting up the sights when I heard a loud bang and the plane was spinning out of control. I bailed out and saw a 190 flying past the debris of my A-20. Steven Stills is reporting for bomber duty :salute:
