New Monitor Advice

Later this week I'll be106 years old - at least thats what it feels like when I fall out of bed of a morning - and it appears that I've reached that time of life where my loved ones have to ask me what I want for my birthday.

 

Being one of those jet-setters that have everything my mind went completely blank - an increasingly familiar situation - until I remembered that I keep meaning to get myself a new monitor and leap into the world of 1920 x 1080 and 24 glorious inches!

 

This will replace my dear old LG 22" which has worked perfectly at 1680 x 1050 these last five years.  All its lovely little pixels will live on in well earned retirement displaying FIFA 2016 on one of the kid's XBoxes.

 

So I'm interested in a 24 incher.     Is it better to go for 1, 2 or 5 ms response time and will this give my gpu - an Nvidia 6600ti 3gb - a harder time?  I don't need anything with built in speakers.

 

Oh yeah, "my loved ones" consist of a primary school pupil, a student, a graduate management trainee and the missus.  What I'm trying to say is it's the thought that counts and basically I'll be paying for it, lol!   As the sheep-worrying season is nearly upon us I'm looking for something as er...cost efficient as possible so I can blow the change on a bucket load of Viagra!

 

Any suggestions or recommendations greatly appreciated.

I went on up to the 27" 3 years ago or so, from a 19" CRT and the 660ti 3g works splendid on it.

It's ASUS VE278 only complaint is it's colors seam to bright. But I got use to it.

24" is fine Arthur.

 

Response time is the time taken to switch a pixel from white to black (or vice versa - I forget which) and is only relevant if you can tell the difference between 1/1000th and 5/1000 th of a second (you really can't - to put this in perspective Top Gun pilots have reaction times in the 200-225ms range) and it has no bearing on frame rates given that the vast majority of monitors can't manage more than 60Hz (100Hz in some cases) hence 60 or 100 frames a second in real terms. If your graphics card can get to those levels go for a 100Hz monitor otherwise go fo a 60Hz - you won't see any difference in use and it'll  make a much cheaper purchase.

Nice, I personally think 27" is the max for 1080 any bigger I'd want a 4k one.

 

Now when you duck your head under the wing in ROF you'll almost feel like you did.

Arrived this morning.  Wow!!   I see what you mean Todd.   No frame rate hit as far as I can tell and trackir seems to run smoother too.  Should have done this ages ago.

Whats the hit on the wallett to go the next step up?

 

I think I'd sooner do that than Occulous, I get spooked enough people sneaking up on me with my head phones on, Hardly need to be blinded to the real world too. Although I'm sure its has its advantages, ask any Ostrage. ;-)

And one other thing if I can find the link I stumbled on some Right winger feed I'll post it in the Hot topics area.

The hit on the wallet was not small at all unfortunately, but after having it for just over a year, I'm very very happy I did decide to push the boat out.

 

1080p just looks so blocky

 

You need a 980 to run 4k (or two 970's). When I got mine in dec 2014 the 980 had only just come out, if I was getting now I'd buy a 980ti.

I'm seeing my monitor for around $500 in the US now, after a quick search.

 

I did think about getting the 32inch until I saw the price, when I bought my 28inch, the 32inch was £1600, screw that!

 

Good thing about having a card that can run 4k, is that it will be able to do VR as well, I'm hearing that they're saying a 980 recommended as min for VR as well.....

When I bought my 55" 4K telly last year, I placed it in the back of my head, that one day it will be a monitor ;-)

 

As for mpw though 1080p will surfice on this monitor size, It crisp enough. But if I ever go bigger inches it will be 4K or whatever they come up with by then.
