  1. Want to have a go at something different, bit of fun? Got a pen and paper handy? Or download the mission and questions jpeg here I have attached a zip file containing a navigation and observation exercise using a Sherman. The route is below along with some questions along the way. It shouldn't take more an hour. Run it with the Tank Icons mod on or 'Icons/navigation off' as it wouldn't be as effective otherwise. Unzip the file into your data/missions folder, there should be 10 files beginning "Navigation exercise Sherman". It isn't a Multiplayer, it is a Mission. Apart from one, all of the sections of the route are on a heading but there are some sections of the route that are distanced, some are timed and some are on a heading to something specific as well. This will give you a few references to help you on your way and confirm some waypoints. When driving the engine is at 100% throughout. Ignore the route and waypoints on the mission map apart from the start point, I made it with the quick tank mission builder so they appear even though they aren't needed. Don't expect to shoot things, we have the Tank range for that Use the HUD if you want but it can be done by using the compass. If you have a go at the questions perhaps we can go through the answers one evening before tanking/flying? Ready? Start the mission. Start from the driver's position, hatch open. Head 180, 500m to road. Head 260 along the road for approx. 5.5 minutes. Stop. Q1 What is standing behind the first building on the right? Head 350 off road as far as you can. Q2 What obstructs your progress? Find the nearest solution that allows you to continue your progress and then follow the road. Stop at the next village. Q3 What is this village called? From the village head 080 for approximately 1.8km and approximately 6 minutes. Stop. Q4 What height are you at? Q5 Go to commander's position and open the hatch. Using the binoculars, what can be seen directly ahead on the horizon? Q6 Approximately how far away to the nearest kilometer from your current position is the thing you have just spotted through the binos? Return to driver's position. Head 046 for approx. 5km using roads as much as possible and stop at the 'T' junction. Q7 What is the significant thing you crossed to get to this point? Q8 Turn your head and look to your 3 o'clock. Using the zoom, what are the 2 most obvious objects in the distance? Head 154 off road for 1km. Stop. Q9 What are you amongst and what ground feature are you overlooking? Head 154 and head for the next village using ground cover as much as possible. Stop at this village. Q10 What is the name of this village? Q11 What did you cross to get to it? Q12 From the commander's position, using binoculars, find the 2 chimneys your driver observed earlier. Which of the 2 chimneys appears to be the tallest? Return to driver's position. Head 200 for approx. 2km passing through the woods and stop. Q13 What did you find at this position? The driving is completed. After a vodka/tea you can head back to your start point in your own time. Q14 What would be your heading back to your start point? Missions.zip

  3. 402FS combat report - mission date 7/12 Our target for today - seemingly with the rest of the 9th AF - was infantry in and around the town of Weeze. We transited to the frontline at Angels 14 and slightly North of the 485th to avoid conflict and offer additional top cover. Upon our descended entry to the target area from the West, Red 3 spotted a trio of Ju52 transports flying below 5000ft and on a reciprocal heading. Following an initial attack from Red 3 and 4, Red leader and his wingman also dropped down for a taste of the action and between the flight, all three enemy Iron Annie's were swiftly sent to earth in flames. Good job. Regrouping, we continued on to attack ground targets of opportunity to the South East of Weeze, where unfortunately we lost Red 4 from Red 3's bomb blast on the first attack run. 2nd Lt Luke Zander, a distinguished canal boat enthusiast, was a man of few words but well liked in the mess for his ability to draw the perfect mallard whilst blindfolded. He will be missed. Let this be a reminder though gentlemen to always observe strict spacing on bomb runs in order to avoid these unnecessary 'own goals'. Either go in close together or keep it distant. After dispatching a number of tricky tree covered targets and with the 485th now in the area we decided to push South to the town of Geldern to see what the craic was down there. With minimal juicy targets around, we took one final punt to the East to strafe and pickle off the remainder of our bombs on the airfield of Bonningshardt-sud. Red leader strafed a lone parked Bf109 as well as blowing a few buildings to smithereens along with Red 2 who also took umbrage to some jerry storage tanks. Calling it there, the trio headed South West for home, picking up a further couple of AAA along the frontline on the way through. Well done gents, some decent team work and a reasonable haul of targets destroyed, marred only by the loss of 2nd Lt Zander. RIP.
